Men's Club
The Gomley Chesed Men's Club is very active in the synagogue and the local community. Men of all
ages are
welcome to
join us in our commitment to leadership development and service to the synagogue
and our
local community. The Men's Club
meets bimonthly and sponsors a number of ongoing programs:
Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle Program – To foster Holocaust awareness, we distribute the yellow
Yom HaShoah
candles to our congregation each year. Donations are used to fund Holocaust-related
programs and to purchase Holocaust
books for our library.
Joint Programs with Sisterhood – Our members work closely with Sisterhood to help fund and
conduct special events,
such as the Shabbat Across America dinner, Jewish Film Festival, and our
Passover Seder.
Fundraisers – The Men's Club offers the Entertainment Book for sale to our members and the
local community each year.
Also, our own Al Eisenpress bakes the best Challah bread in town
several times a year to raise funds for the club.
Service to the Synagogue – We provide funds and manpower to support routine maintenance of
the shul, and for
special repairs and improvements. Our volunteers prepare the synagogue's sukkah
each year and help out with other festivals
and special events. We also purchase and present special
gifts to Bar and Bas Mitzvahs, graduates, and others deserving of
special recognition.
Service to the Community – The Men's Club formally provides financial assistance to
Oasis Social Ministry,
a Portsmouth homeless shelter. Individually, our members donate their time
to worthy causes such as Meals on Wheels,
Jewish War Veterans, Churchland Interfaith Council,
and regular visits to our friends and congregants in local hospitals
and nursing homes.
